It is the most famous autumn celebration
and it is celebrated on the 4th Thursday of November.
On this day, people in the USA and Canada
give thanks* to God by feasting* and praying*.
Origins
In 1620, on the boat
« Mayflower », English Pilgrims* (who wanted to keep their religion
and not adopt the King of England’s religion) sailed* to the USA.
They arrived in December in winter
and only a few survived because they could not grow* vegetables during this
season.
But an Indian called Samoset explained how to grow this land and
gave them some grains of corn to sow*.
In November 1621, the harvest* was excellent
and the Pilgrims celebrated the harvest with Indians.
To celebrate the memory of their ancestors and
thank God and Indians for their help,
the day of Thanksgiving became a National Day.
A traditional
Thanksgiving dinner
It’s an important holiday for family. Americans invite their family for a big dinner on Thanksgiving.
It is composed of turkey, cranberry sauce,
sweet corn, mashed potatoes*, sweet potatoes, green beans and for desert
pumpkin pie* or apple pie…
