GUY FAWKES NIGHT

On 5th November, British celebrate Guy Fawkes Night or Bonfire Night with bonfires* and fireworks*.

They celebrate the failure* of the Gunpowder Plot* of 5 November 1605, when a man named Guy Fawkes and a group of conspirators tried to blow up* the Houses of Parliament.

They were executed for treason*, but every year people remember them.

And today people continue to make « guys » representing Guy Fawkes and burn* them on bonfires!

In 1620, on the boat « Mayflower », English Pilgrims* (who wanted to keep their religion and not adopt the King of England’s religion) sailed* to the USA.

They arrived in December in winter and only a few survived because they could not grow* vegetables during this season.

But an Indian called  Samoset explained how to grow this land and gave them some grains of corn to sow*.

In November 1621, the harvest* was excellent and the Pilgrims celebrated the harvest with Indians.

To  celebrate the memory of their ancestors and thank God and Indians for their help,   the day of Thanksgiving became a National Day.
